If you’ve been on the internet within the last month, chances are you’ve seen the numerous videos of your friends and family taking the ice bucket challenge. Everyone from Bill Gates to Tom Cruise has undergone the challenge, including Joel Schlessinger, his wife, Nancy, and son, Daniel. The campaign helps raise awareness about ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and encourages participants to donate to the ALS Association. Watch a video of the Schlessinger’s ice bucket challenge and see who else they have nominated.
Joel Schlessinger and his family accepted the challenge in honor of Nancy’s grandmother.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain. This condition causes loss of muscle control and patients often become paralyzed due to the loss of muscle action. Nancy’s grandmother, Fannie Wels, suffered from ALS and passed away before Nancy was able to meet her.
The ice bucket challenge is a way to raise awareness about this disease and nominate others to take the challenge and donate to the cause. Challengers must dump ice water on themselves and then nominate their friends to complete the challenge or donate to the ALS Association. Joel Schlessinger and his family chose to accept the challenge from Lee Nakamoto and donate to the organization.
Joel Schlessinger’s donation will go toward researching treatments and cures for ALS.
More than 5,000 individuals are diagnosed with ALS each year yet there is still very little known about this disease. Donations to the organization go toward research as well care for those affected by the disease and support for their family and friends. Clinics and centers across the country provide care and services for thousands of patients every year.
